Palliative Care: Everything You Need to Know but Were Afraid to Ask

Providing care to patients from illness to health is the expected goal of healthcare professionals. Providing care to patients at the end of life, however, necessitates unique knowledge and/or skills. This one-day course is designed to provide the healthcare professional with an overview of what is meant by palliative care and how this type of caring encompasses, but is not exclusive to, end-of-life care. This course will provide discussions that will ask employees to examine their own implicit biases and how these biases can affect perceptions and treatment decisions involving palliative care. An introduction to palliative care as well as important aspects of this concept will be addressed including symptom/pain management, communication, and ethical concerns. Current topics such as POLST, Advance Directives and Moral Distress will be discussed. The End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC - Core Palliative Care Training Program) materials will be referenced in this course.

Topics:
-Palliative Care: What is it?
-Compassionate Pain Management
