This course is an introduction to the basic principles underlying electroconvulsive therapy. Topics of discussion and content will include history, legal applications, basic science, best understood mechanism of action, patient referrals, and protocols for continuation and maintenance. Additionally there will be a discussion on the use of Ketamine for treatment resistant depression and an expert panel discussion on difficult cases.

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:
1) Describe the historical context of electroconvulsive therapy and understand the specific California laws surrounding its use.
2) Refer appropriate patient candidates for electroconvulsive therapy.
3) Analyze the state of the evidence on continuation and maintenance electroconvulsive therapy.
4) Recognize the basic principles of Ketamine for treatment resistant depression.
